What is petrolatum used for in manufacturing?

Petrolatum, sold to consumers as petroleum jelly, is a semi-solid mix of mineral waxes and oils refined from petroleum. Manufacturers use it as an occlusive and emollient base in body lotions, hair creams, lip balms, baby products and pharmaceutical ointments, because a thin layer slows water loss from the skin, it is chemically stable and it doesn't go rancid.

Grades

Grades and specifications

White petrolatum USP/BP
Highly refined, for skin care, baby care and medicines.
Yellow and amber petrolatum
Less refined; used in some industrial and lower-cost products.
Hard and soft grades
Different wax-to-oil ratios set the melting range, important for hot climates.
Safety and quality

Handling, safety and regulation

Petrolatum is handled warm or melted for blending. Only fully refined grades should be used on skin; buyers ask for pharmacopoeia compliance and, for some markets, data on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Used in cosmetics and as a pharmaceutical excipient. Finished cosmetics in Nigeria require NAFDAC registration; medicinal ointments fall under pharmaceutical rules.

Supply chain

Where petroleum jelly comes from

Petrolatum is separated from petroleum residues at refineries by distillation and purified by filtration, the basis of the process since Robert Chesebrough began selling it in 1871. Cosmetic grades come from a limited number of refiners and are imported into Nigeria in drums or slabs for local blending.
